WHITING, Ind. – After a closely-contested conference outing, Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) pulled away from the Crimson Wave with a six-run ninth inning, winning game one of the three-game weekend series, 11-6, Friday at Oil City Stadium.
The Tigers took the lead at the start due to a combination of base stealing and a sacrifice flies. It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth when the Wave were able to level the score on Matthew Jackson' solo home run.
Olivet, after conceding the home run, regained the lead in the fifth with a 3-RBI double. Not to be outdone, the Wave fought back with four runs of their own to take a 5-4 lead.
Antonio Reyes made his way around the bases after hitting a single, crossing home from a passed ball. Then, Diontrell Earls smacked a 3-run homer to overtake Olivet.
The Crimson Wave did everything they could to preserve their lead, finishing Olivet Nazarene batters quickly in the next two innings. However, the defense finally cracked in the top of the eighth when the Tigers scored the tying run on a single to center.
Needing to get back on track at the plate, CCSJ couldn't muster any hits in the bottom of the eighth, and the failed frame proved costly. Unable to stop the momentum shift, Olivet unleashed a six-run performance in the ninth to run away from Calumet.
The Crimson Wave added one run when Earls' double brought in Sean Ellison, but the game was well beyond them by the time they got back to offense. Earls led the final totals for the Wave, batting 2-for-5 with four RBIs.
Patrick Holbrook was 2-for-3 in the defeat.
CCSJ's record slips to 5-33-1 (0-14 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) on the season, and will be back in action against Olivet Nazarene tomorrow with a doubleheader in Bourbonnais, Ill.
