WHITING, Ind. – With their annual Crimson Wave Invite on the horizon, the Calumet College of St. Joseph women's volleyball team was ready for one more tune up before playing four games in two days this weekend. They look more than ready, as the Crimson and Gray defeated Great Lakes Christian College in straight sets (25-8, 25-10, 25-7) Wednesday night at the Rittenmeyer Center.
Great Lakes was never able to get anything going in any of the three matches on the evening. Set one was the Wave go on a 12-0 run in the middle of frame, in route to a 25-8 victory. Great Lakes managed to secure only two points in the match that were not the result of Crimson Wave errors. While the Wave weren't able to sustain a large run like they did in the first set, GLCC would never be allowed to get within more than three points of CCSJ. Calumet served up 11 aces in the set, easily taking it 25-10. Another massive 11-0 run for the Wave allowed them to coast in set three, winning 25-7 and defeating Great Lakes for the second time this season.
Abigail Strauch (FR/Griffith, IN) lead Calumet College (3-15, 0-9 CCAC) in kills with seven, while Alyssa Morales (JR/Tucson, AZ) led the team with 4 digs, and Rhiannon Kozy (JR/Griffith, IN) contributed seven assists, one shy of Johna Fackler (SO/Mt. Washington, KY)'s game high of eight. The team ended up with 24 kills, while hitting .432 in the match, easily the best of the season. The Crimson Wave also served up a total of 25 aces, while committing only five errors in the entire match.
A busy weekend will now welcome the Wave as they prepare to host five other teams at the Rittenmeyer Center on Friday and Saturday. The Crimson and Gray will face William Penn University on Friday at 3:00 pm, before taking on University of Michigan-Dearborn at 7:00.
