Crimson Wave stumble in first game of new year
Whiting, IN – The Calumet College of St. Joseph men's basketball team suffered a 77-54 loss to Indiana University South Bend on Saturday afternoon at the Rittenmeyer Center. CCSJ was without starting center J.Caleb Slawinski due to a hamstring injury. Guard Scott Gowan led the Wave, matching his season-high of 15 points in the loss.
How it Happened
CCSJ (7-6, 2-4 CCAC) got off to a slow start in this one trailing 10-2 before Hrvoje Majcunic swished a 3-pointer to put an end to the 8-0 Titans run.
The defensive zone that IU South Bend (7-7, 4-2 CCAC) was using stifled the Crimson Wave and had them in a 10-point hole eight minutes into the contest.
Over the next 10 minutes of action, the Wave outscored the Titans 14 to 7 to cut the deficit down to three. Jared Hankins scored eight of his 13 points throughout the stretch, coupled with two catch and shoot 3-pointers from Majcunic.
IU South Bend answered back with a run of its own and took a 12-point advantage into halftime.
CCSJ was unable to slow down the Titans in the second half and the deficit grew to as much as 25.
For the first time this season, the Crimson Wave have suffered consecutive losses losing by at least 20 points. CCSJ was outscored in the paint 42 to 16 and missed 24 more 3-pointers than IU South Bend.
For a team that averages 79.5 points per contest, the Wave have been held to less than 60 points for the fourth time this season.
Crimson Wave Leaders
Scott Gowan finished with 15 points, tying his season-high. Jared Hankins ended with 13 points while Hrvoje Majcunic finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Colby Wiggins chipped in with 10 points and Oshawn Lee contributed with six steals.
