Wiggins' 31 leads CCSJ to win over Trinity Christian
Whiting, IN – The Calumet College of St. Joseph men's basketball team picked up a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference win on Wednesday night, after holding off Trinity Christian 78-75 at the Rittenmeyer Center. Senior guard Colby Wiggins lead all scorers with 31 points, making it his fourth game this season with at least 25 points.
CCSJ was able to earn a much needed CCAC win without starting center J.Caleb Slawinski and starting guard Scott Gowan.
How it Happened
The game did not start off in the Wave's favor as they found themselves trailing 8-0 five minutes into the contest. It wasn't until the 16:31 mark that CCSJ (8-6, 3-4 CCAC) would register its first field goal of the evening.
Trinity Christian (5-10, 2-5 CCAC) would continue to contain the Crimson Wave majority of the first half, gaining their largest lead of the night at 14 points.
CCSJ would rally during the final seven minutes, closing the first half on a 25-8 run to take a three-point lead into halftime. Throughout this stretch five different players scored for the Wave and 10 of the 25 points were point blank layups.
In the second half, CCSJ looked to be putting away the Trolls as they took a double-digit lead at the 12:31 mark after a pair of made free throws by Jared Hankins.
Trinity Christian would slowly chip away at the lead, making it a one score game with seven minutes remaining in regulation.
Both teams went back and forth with electrifying and momentum shifting plays, but the Wave would not relinquish its marginal lead. CCSJ made all its necessary free throws down the stretch and Zion Morgan made a jump shot in the lane to keep the Wave on top.
Trinity Christian's Cross had a chance at the final buzzer to tie the game, but with CCSJ making him shoot over two defenders, the shot was no good.
The Crimson Wave earned their first win in 2025 as well as their third conference win of the season. CCSJ struggled from behind the arc, shooting 7-of-25 (28 percent), but swished 17 of its 22 free throw attempts. The Wave also had 14 more second chance points than the Trolls.
