Cross Country Competes at USF Twilight Invite

CHANNAHON, Ill. - The Crimson Wave cross country teams raced their way to impressive finishes and personal records in the first meet of the new year, as the CCSJ squads completed the 5Ks in the USF Twilight Invite in Channahon on Friday evening.
"It was a really fast course today and we had a lot of PR's," cross country coach Rick Torres said. "I am really proud of our teams today, and this start enables us to continue to get better as we continue the year."
On the men's side, the group finished 7th out of 10 possible teams with a combined time of 1:25:37.0. Individually, CCSJ was led by Roger Malonda, who finished 29th overall out of 115 runners with a time of 16:14.8. Miguel Flores was up next with a time of 16:30.4, good for 38th.
Matt King came across the line 10 seconds later at 16:40.1, and was followed by Deonta Pittman and Luis Munoz, who rounded out the top five finishers for the Crimson Wave.
Harley Sutton was out front for the CCSJ women, coming in below 21 minutes (20:39.5) - good for 38th out of 97 runners. Kellyn Vale (21:24.3) and Dayanir Montoya (21:33.4) finished in the 21st minute, and were closely followed by Danielle Weems and Carly Kohout, 22:42.8 and 22:50.3, respectively.
The aforementioned women's bunch combined for a 1:51:47.5 total time.
The teams can recuperate over the next two weeks as they don't race again until the National Catholic Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Sept. 16. The race is set to begin at 3 p.m.
