Softball shutouts Lincoln in the first CCAC games of the season
Lincoln, IL - Sunday, the Calumet College Softball team played a doubleheader at Lincoln College on one of the first sunny days in weeks. The Crimson Wave came out strong, having a long break in between games due to the weather, but there was no sign of nerves for the Wave. In the first game, the Wave scored first in the 3rd inning and never let up, finishing with a 9-0 shutout with Senior Josselline Monge in the circle. In game 2, Sophomore Kenzie Lanman started for the Wave and held the Lynx off for 5-innings, while the Crimson Wave offense warmed up and put 10 on the board so Sophomore Kylee Bunnell could finish the 6-inning game with an inning in the circle.
Game 1 - CCSJ 9, Lincoln 0
The Crimson Wave defense was solid, not committing an error throughout the 7-innings played. The Wave scored first in the top of the 3rd inning with Junior Kayla Kirmani's single, and Lynx errors scored the two runners on base and Kirmani. Kirmani had another RBI in the 5th inning, scoring Sophomore Roxanne Ines from third on a sac fly to centerfield. In the 6th inning, Senior Grace Elrod doubled and scored Freshman Adelina Staden from first. The Crimson Wave secured their win in the top of the 7th innings after a double from Sophomore Alex Navarro scored Ines, Sophomore Ryan Regnier scored on a wild pitch, a double from Staden scored Navarro, and a single from Sophomore Marissa McElligott scored Staden for a 9-0 lead. Monge pitched a complete 7 innings with 2 strikeouts and only allowing 2 hits.
Game 2 - CCSJ 10, Lincoln 0
In another errorless game, the Crimson Wave defense backed up their pitchers on the field and at the plate. Kirmani got the first RBI of the game, scoring Ines from third, and giving the Wave a 1-0 lead to start the game. In the top of the 3rd, Ines doubled and scored Sophomore Tiffanie Brieno from second for a 2-0 lead. In the top of the 4th, Elrod hit a two-run home run to bring the lead to 4-0. Lanman pitched a solid 5 innings for the Wave with 2 strikeouts and giving up just 1 walk and 1 hit. The Crimson Wave put the pressure on the Lynx when Navarro scored on a wild pitch, Regnier singled and scored Brieno and Sophomore Priscilla Seniw, and a single from Freshman Kylee Slack turned into 3 RBIs for a 10-0 lead going into the bottom of the 6th inning. Bunnell went to the circle in the bottom of the 6th inning and shut down the Lynx with 1 strikeout, allowing just 1 walk, and helped the Wave to a 10-0 win.
Leading the Crimson Wave at the plate and on the bases, Ines went 5-7 at the plate with 5 runs scored, 1 walk, 2 doubles, and 2 stolen bases. Regnier went 4-7 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Slack went 4-8 with a double and 3 RBIs. Navarro went 4-8 with 3 runs scored, 4 RBIs, a double, and a triple.
The Crimson Wave's next game is Wednesday, April 6th at 3 PM and 5 PM as they host St. Ambrose for their first home game of the season.
