Softball season comes to an end at CCAC Tournament
Crown Point, IN - The Calumet College Softball team extended their season into the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament in Crown Point. The Crimson Wave were set as the #8 seed and would play the #1 seed, St. Xavier, on Thursday, but after a three-day delay due to extensive rain, the Wave played their first game on Sunday morning. The Crimson Wave played a tough first game against the #1 seed but lost 6-2. Going into the losers bracket, the Crimson Wave were set to play later that day against the #5 seed Cardinal Stritch after their first-round loss. The Wave started the game off from behind and ran out of time to come back and lost to the Wolves 5-1 and were eliminated from the tournament.
Game 1: CCSJ 2, SXU 6
The Crimson Wave started off the game by holding off St. Xavier from scoring in the first inning, but the Cougars took to the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning with a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, the Crimson Wave tied it up after a leadoff double from Adelina Staden and a sacrifice bunt from Priscilla Seniw moved Staden to third base. Brianne Kosina hit a deep fly ball to left field to score Staden and tie the game at 1-1.
The Crimson Wave held the Cougars in the bottom of the third inning and took to the plate again in the top of the fourth inning. In this inning, Ryan Regnier led off with a double and was moved to third base after a sacrifice bunt from Kayla Kirmani. Kylee Slack hit a single up the middle that scored Regnier and gave the Crimson Wave a 2-1 lead going into the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, St. Xavier had two walks when a single scored 2 runs, and a 3-run homerun put the Cougars up 6-2. The Crimson Wave held St. Xavier in the bottom of the sixth inning, but couldn't string enough hits together to score again in the final innings, losing their first game of the tournament 6-2.
Game 2: CCSJ 1, CSU 5
In the elimination game of the tournament, the Crimson Wave faced Cardinal Stritch. The Wolves started the game with a string of hits that led to a 5 run lead for CSU going into the second inning. The Crimson Wave's defense tightened up, but their offense couldn't find a gap to put enough runners on base until the seventh inning. A leadoff single from Slack put a runner on base and a single from Alex Navarro put runners on first and third base. Grace Elrod hit a double to center field that scored one, but Navarro was thrown out at home and Elrod was out at third base. The Crimson Wave weren't able to keep the inning going, losing to Cardinal Stritch 5-1 and being eliminated from the tournament.
Slack was 3-6 with 1 RBI, Regnier was 3-6, Kosina was 1-3 with 1 RBI and sacrifice, and Staden was 2-5 with a walk in the two games.
The Crimson Wave finished the season 16-24 overall and 10-12 in CCAC play. Freshman, Kylee Slack, was named to the CCAC Softball All-Tournament Team going 3-6 with an RBI.
