Whiting’s Barbosa and Madreuno sign with CCSJ
Whiting High School graduates and brothers, Nino Barbosa and Tony Madreuno signed to continue their academic and athletic careers at Calumet College and Coach Novak's Sprint Football program. Playing for the Whiting Oilers together, Barbosa and Madreuno each made a name for themselves, and Spring Football gives these brothers the opportunity to rejoin each other on the field.
Barbosa, a Wide Receiver and Defensive Back graduated from Whiting in 2019 and attended William Penn University for school and football. While a part of the Whiting Oilers program, Barbosa was First-Team All-State, Second-Team USA Today All-USA Team, a First-Team All-Area and All-Conference pick, Starter in the North vs. South All-Star game, Post Tribune Defensive Player of the Year, Chicago Tribune Athlete of the Month, and Team MVP. Barbosa also led the state in interceptions, punt return yards, and kickoff return yards.
Barbosa transferred to CCSJ and is majoring in Criminal Justice and said " I picked to come to CCSJ because everyone has welcomed me as family and wants me to be the best man I can be. I am looking forward to lacing my cleats up and putting a small school on the map and starting something new."
Madreuno, a 2021 graduate from Whiting High School, is a versatile athlete playing anything from Center Back, Quarterback, and Slotback. After graduating from Whiting, Madreuno attended IUPUI. Madreuno will major in Business Management at CCSJ and said " I chose CCSJ to continue my academic and athletic career. I chose to come here because I feel I will be able to be successful in the classroom and on the field. I am looking forwards to starting the season and winning games with the team."
The Crimson Wave Sprint Football team will be competing in their inaugural season in the Fall of 2022 in the Midwest Sprint Football League (MSFL). Sprint football has the same rules as standard American football except players must maintain a weight limit of 178 pounds. The Midwest Sprint Football League will be playing its inaugural season in the Fall of 2022 with 6 member schools competing, with Calumet College being one of the founding members.
